Why Fused Quartz is Essential for Wafer Carriers

Fused quartz has a molecular structure consisting almost entirely of silicon dioxide (SiO2). This high purity ensures that when wafers undergo high-temperature processes like diffusion or chemical vapor deposition (CVD), there is zero diffusion of heavy metals or boron/phosphorus from the carrier into the silicon wafer.

Furthermore, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of fused silica is extremely low (approximately 5.5 x 10^-7 / °C). This ensures that the quartz boat does not warp, bend, or crack even when subjected to rapid thermal transitions from room temperature to over 1000°C.

Critical Design Aspects of Quartz Boats

1. Slot Geometry: The width, depth, and angle of the slots in a quartz boat must be highly accurate. If the slots are too tight, the wafers may chip or stick due to thermal expansion differences. If the slots are too loose, the wafers may tilt, leading to non-uniform gas exposure during deposition.

2. Structural Integrity: Standard configurations include shell boats, ladder boats, and cage boats. The choice depends on the gas flow design of the furnace. Horizontal diffusion systems typically use ladder-style quartz boats, while LPCVD processes often require caged or slotted tube boats to control gas distribution.
